St Stephen Protomartyr Ukrainian Catholic Church

Jesus Christ came to establish a way of life; we call that the Church. We are an organized body of believers following in the footsteps of the apostles, according to a particular custom, culture, liturgy, and spiritual traditions recognized as an Eastern Catholic Church. We are in union with Rome. We pray for the pope and commemorate him in our services. We have fellowship with our brother Roman Catholics, and many other Christian and non-Christian churches besides.

Our church belongs to the Ukrainian Catholic Eparchy of Edmonton.

Stephen was a saint. Read his story in Acts 6:5ff. Originally assigned duties “to serve at table” - a busboy! - he testified to the power of the Holy Spirit unlike anyone else. He was stoned after preaching a powerful sermon, and died. That makes him the church’s first martyr; ergo the name “Protomartyr.”

Our parish was founded in May of 1967 as a mission in Calgary,  adopted the name “St Stephen Protomartyr Ukrainian Catholic Church” in its founding Constitutions, and the rest, ... well, is unique history.

Come pray with us and discover who Jesus Christ is.
And re-discover your roots!

Who are we, and what is a “Protomartyr?”
